Ready To Rumble: Acer, Asus Eye Bigger Netbooks

Computer makers Acer and Asus, two players in the rapidly growing netbook market, are looking to capture customer dollars that are pouring into netbooks. But now the two manufacturers are taking the fight to new ground.

Early last month, Acer lifted the curtain on more than 20 new products across all of its brands, including Gateway, Packard Bell and eMachines. Included in the products were two new netbooks, an update to the Acer Aspire One netbook and Gateway LT30.

Both of the machines are looking to drive the netbook market by expanding the size of the machines to 11.6 inches, up from 10.1 inches, which had become a sort of de facto standard in the space.

Meanwhile, the DigiTimes reports that Asus also is planning to launch an 11.6-inch Eee PC later this month.

According to the report, Asus President Jerry Shen considers the 10.1-inch netbook the "mainstream specification" for this year. Shen also believes that while 10.1-inch netbooks will account for 50 percent of his company's total shipments in 2009, the 11.6-inch Eee PC will account for 30 percent of the company's shipments.

The 10.1-inch Eee PC is a known entity for Asus. But presenting customers with a brand new netbook with a bigger form factor and announcing it will garner 30 percent of the company's shipments seems like a bold move, to say the least.

Still, Asus may be feeling pressure to keep up with Acer, which is clearly trying to make a move in the netbook space. On April 9, J.T. Wang, chairman of Acer, said there were plans to ship 10 million netbooks in 2009.

Just 20 days later, Wang predicted that the netbook market will hit about 50 million units in 2010, with Acer's market share being between 40 to 50 percent.

Whether or not this market segment is big enough for both of these companies remains to be seen. However, it looks as if the game of follow the leader that is happening in the netbook category will continue.

Difference between a Laptop and Netbook Review Video

If you wondered what's the difference between a laptop (notebook) and a netbook, this video is trying to explain the differences. It's a little old and not updated in my opinion. Now, netbooks are much more powerful in terms of memory and Hard Drive and can compare with a laptop.

Netbook Shipments Jump in First Quarter

An Apple official may have trashed netbooks for cramped keyboards and "junky" hardware, but shipments for the inexpensive laptops are showing no signs of slowing down.

IDC last week said worldwide netbook shipments went up sevenfold to roughly 4.5 million during the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter last year. Netbooks comprised approximately 8 percent of all PC shipments during the first quarter.

Despite an early backlash due to uncertainty surrounding the device, netbooks have been grabbing more attention since early 2008, said Jay Chou, research analyst at IDC. Netbooks are attractive as secondary devices because of their low prices and small sizes, he said. Low prices helped fuel netbook sales, although people in general have reduced spending during the recession.

"People in different areas have different expectations of what [netbooks] are supposed to do. Some of our surveys show students using it as a note-taking device. They don't want to take a 6-pound [laptop] to campus," Chou said.

Netbooks also meet the needs of many people for Web surfing and word processing.

"Vendors are waking up to the fact that people respond to so-called 'good-enough' computing. They don't really need all the power of a Core 2 Duo CPU most of the time. Most of the time CPU usage is about 5 percent," Chou said.

Netbook shipments for the year should double to 22 million in 2009 compared to last year, taking a larger share of PC shipments as the year goes on. Shipments should pick up during the back-to-school season in the third quarter, and possibly jump in the fourth-quarter holiday season.

However, shipments may record slower incremental growth starting in 2010 as netbooks become a mainstay of the PC market, Chou said.

Chou couldn't provide exact market-share numbers for each vendor for the first quarter of 2009, but he didn't expect a change in rankings from the fourth quarter. Acer was the top netbook vendor during the fourth quarter with a 32 percent market share, followed by Asustek, with a 26 percent market share. Following Asustek were Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and Samsung.

Acer President and CEO Gianfranco Lanci recently said the company expects to ship between 10 million and 12 million netbooks during 2009. It shipped just over 5 million netbooks in 2008.

Due to seasonal reasons, shipments fell sequentially from the 6.2 million netbooks shipped in the fourth quarter of 2008. Buying activity is higher in the fourth quarter because of the holiday season. Purchases slowed down after the holiday season ended, affecting netbook shipments during the first quarter of 2009.

Netbook shipments saw sharp growth in Europe and Japan during the first quarter, Chou said. Japan is usually a market where people crave small things, and netbooks fit into that category, Chou said.

Samsung was a relative latecomer to the netbook space but saw plenty of buyers for its NC10 laptop in Western Europe, Chou said. Samsung offered users a better overall netbook experience with a larger screen and a decent-sized keyboard.

Telecommunication companies are playing a big part in Europe and Japan to drive the netbook phenomenon by bundling it with telecom services. The trend is also reaching the U.S., with AT&T offering a US$99 Acer netbook with a two-year mobile broadband contract.

Netbook adoption will also continue to grow as PC makers add more and more features like bigger screen sizes and better graphics, Chou said. Asus, for example, added a DVD drive to one of its models. Early netbooks have been panned for poor graphics capabilities, but Nvidia has come out with a chip platform that will make it possible to watch full high-definition video on netbooks.

There is also a growing interest in netbooks with screen sizes between 9 and 12 inches, Chou said. Early last year, laptops with a 7-inch screen size dominated shipments, but interest waned as laptops with larger screen sizes shipped, Chou said.

IDC defines netbooks -- which it calls mini-notebooks -- as laptops with screen sizes between 7 and 12 inches with low-power processors like Intel's Atom processors.

More 12-inch netbooks coming this month

Two major netbook players appear set to release new models with larger displays that will further blur the lines with traditional laptops.

Later this month Acer will release an Aspire One netbook with an 11.6-inch widescreen display. Acer currently sells Aspire One models with either an 8.9-inch or 10.1-inch display. A general manager for Acer in the UK described the new model in a YouTube video posted by The Register, a hardware site. The Aspire One 751 will be thinner than the current models and it will have a full-size laptop keyboard. It will start at about $560 with an Intel Atom 5-series processor, 1GB of memory, 160GB hard drive and Windows XP.

(Related: The Boy Genius Report says Acer and AT&T have struck a deal to sell the Aspire One 10-inch with a 3G data contract through Costco starting May 11–presumably at a subsidized price.)

Meanwhile, the Asia-based newswire DigiTimes reported that Asustek president Jerry Shen said his company will launch an Eee PC netbook with an 11.6-inch display later this month. Dell already sells a netbook with a 12.1-inch display, the Inspiron Mini 12.

While 10-inch netbooks have found themselves a nice niche, these larger netbooks are likely to run into stiff competition from a new class of less-costly, ultra-thin laptops based on the AMD Athlon Neo, such as the HP Pavilion dv2z, or the upcoming Intel CULV processors, such as MSI’s X-Slim series.

Netbook sales predicted to hit 50 million

y Gillian Shaw, Vancouver SunMay 2, 2009

1. EEEPC 1000HE, ASUS, $459

Enjoy all-day computing with the 1000HE that runs for more than nine hours on a charge, with its six-cell lithium-ion battery. At 1.45 kg, a 10-inch LED backlight WSVGA screen, with a $459 price tag, it fits right in the sweet spot of mini computers known as netbooks. Apple is still speaking somewhat derisively about them -- asked about them in its latest financial analysts' call, the company dismissed netbooks as "junky." Apparently, consumers don't agree, and they are turning these little gadgets into one of the faster-selling items on tech shelves -- an estimated 50 million to be sold this year. ASUS is a netbook pioneer, and the 1000HE comes with 160 GB storage, one-gig memory, camera, 802.11 high-speed wireless and Bluetooth built in. Check it out at www.asus.com.

2. MSI WIND TOP AE 1900, MSI COMPUTER, $529 US

An all-in-one computer, the AE 1900 has an 18.9-inch touch screen and SRS premium sound. With an Intel Atom 230 processor, it runs Windows XP home and has built-in webcam and microphone for audio and video recording. MSI is on the green bandwagon, with the AE1900 that uses 80 per cent less energy than traditional desktop PCs and it consumes no more than 50 watts of power. A 160-gig hard drive, a four-in-one card reader and four USB ports, along with a mouse and keyboard complete the package. www.msicomputer.com/msiaio

Netbook growth might end when economy recovers, says iSuppli

As consumers' disposable incomes dwindle, they are flocking to buy low-cost netbook PCs, driving global shipments up by 68.5% in 2009 and by a 2,424% in 2008, according to iSuppli.

However, as economic conditions improve in 2010 and beyond, shipment growth will inevitably fall, iSuppli forecasts.

"People are not buying netbooks because they are truly desirable platforms, but rather because as low-cost PCs, they offer a good mix of features at an acceptable price point," said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms, for iSuppli. "With financial motivation a key factor in many netbook sales, growth of the netbook platform is likely to slow down when the economy comes back and consumers have more money in their pockets."

Global shipment growth for netbooks will decelerate to a less astounding, but still impressive, 39.6% in 2010, and will continue to slow to reach 13.1% in 2013.

iSuppli defines the netbook as a mobile PC with a fully-functional operating system, including local storage, a keyboard and wireless connectivity. Netbooks are priced at less than US$600. The primary function of these devices is portable Internet access, along with providing a basic computing experience, and serving as a low-cost alternative to other types of PCs.

Because of this, much of the growth of netbooks has come at the expense other PC categories, particularly desktops. Global desktop PC shipments are expected to drop by 9.5% in 2009. But while desktop shipments are set to continue to decrease during the following years, the rate of decline will slow as consumers regain their purchasing power.

As the economy recovers and consumer appetites turn back to higher-performance systems, netbook brands may be tempted to add features and boost the performance of their products. Intel is already upgrading its netbook silicon platform to support high-definition video playback. Furthermore, display sizes are moving to the 10-inch range, up from 7- and 8.9-inches. Furthermore, Nvidia has offered its Ion platform, using a GeForce 9400M chipset along with Intel's Atom processor, a solution that increases the graphics performance of the netbook platform.

However, netbook makers should be wary of this trend, Wilkins warned.

"Some of these high-tech features that increase netbook performance are questionable," Wilkins said. "Netbooks are inherently inexpensive platforms that sacrifice performance and bells and whistles to achieve low pricing. While netbook capabilities and performance will inexorably rise in the coming years, the more powerful they become, the more threatening they become to regular notebook models, through comparable performance but lower price."

With the price differential between netbooks and low-end notebooks as little as US$100 in some cases, netbook makers must be careful to keep the costs of their platforms down.

The rise of the netbook market has come as boon to processor suppliers, particularly Intel. Atom is clearly not a performance-orientated processor, and yet due to the ramp in netbook shipments is having an impact on company revenues. The demand for netbook and value notebooks has resulted in some suppliers noting slight increases in demand for single-core processors as a result, iSuppli commented.

Acer Launches 11.6-inch Aspire One 751 Netbook

Taiwanese manufacturer Acer has announced a rather interesting laptop featuring a 11.6-inch LCD screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

The 751 is based on the usual Netbook blueprint from Intel. An Atom processor (a Z520 running at 1.33GHz only), a Mobile US15W Express chipset from the same manufacturer, 1GB RAM, a 160GB hard disk drive, Dolby Pro Logic sound certification and a 6-cell 5200mAh battery that promises 8 hours worth of computing.

Acer's latest netbook also comes with WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G option as well as a multi-card reader. The 1-inch thick laptop comes with the usual array of in/out ports, including a VGA output, USB ports and an ethernet jack. The WXGA backlit LED display can display 1366x768 pixels - ideal for HD content - and has a rather thin frame with a webcam sitting on top of it.

Customers will be able to choose between Windows XP and Vista. The release date has yet to be confirmed but it will apparently be sold for around £350. A more expensive version will include 2GB memory, Vista Home Basic and 250GB hard disk drive.

The netbook will be available in red, white, blue and black and comes with a one year internal traveller's warranty. Acer has also released a number of more traditional laptops under the Timeline brand. According to early previews, their battery life are expected to be within touching distance of 9 hours.

New Samsung N120 Netbook breaks into Bestseller List

Samsung unveiled the new Samsung N120 Netbook about a week ago. The Samsung N120 is already now under the 25 bestselling Netbooks on Amazon. What makes this Samsung netbook interesting compared to the dominating Asus Eee netbooks?

Description
The Samsung N120-12GW features the 1.6Ghz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 10.1-inch, 97% of full-size keyboard (12 inch keyboard), 1.3MP Camera, stereo speakers with SRS sound, and a 6 cell battery promising 7.5 hours.
Measurements of the Samsung N120 are 10.71" x 7.4" x 1.17" and the weight is 2.8lbs.
The Samsung N120 of course runs Windows XP.

The Samsung N120 appeals with a slim-line design paired with an ergonomic keyboard and decent media features. Samsung highlights the video conferencing capabilities and audio quality of the N120. Samsung aims to blur the line between laptops and netbooks in the multimedia capabilities, but let’s not forget that the N120 is running the old XP OS and is by no means a HD and 3D powerhouse.

Comparison
The current bestselling netbook on Amazon.com is the Asus Eee 1000HE. Lets compare the Samsung N120 with the Asus Eee 100HE to find out why you would want to buy the newcomer.

The Asus Eee 1000HE is using the newer Intel Atom N280 CPU running on 1.66Ghz. Asus promises a longer battery life of 9.5 hours, but this is really not really easy to compare unless you have both netbooks sitting next to each other performing the same tasks.
Both the N120 and the 1000HE feature a 10 inch LED screen, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD and a 1.3MP camera. The keyboard of the Asus Eee 1000HE is a chiclet-style keyboard having 92% the size of generic notebooks. As mentioned above the Samsung netbook has slightly bigger one with 97%.
Measurements of the 1000HE are 10.47 (W) x 7.53 (D) x 1.12-1.50 (H) inches, which makes it a bit thicker on some parts of the netbook compared to the N120.

The Asus Eee PC 1000HE sells for $387.53, where as the Samsung N120 sells for $460.24.

The essence of the above is that there is actually no reason to buy the Samsung N120 instead of the Asus Eee PC 1000HE besides color. The N120 is offered in white and the 1000HE is only offered in black and blue. The slightly bigger keyboard cannot be worth the $70 price difference. If you just go by specifications and price the Asus Eee PC 1000HE is quite a bit better than the new N120. There is possibly some arguement about the slimmer overall look of the N120 that looks a bit (just a bit, really cooler in terms of netbook case design is the new Eee 1008HA) cooler than the Eee 1000HE. If you have bought the N120 please email me why you picked it.
