Netbook sales predicted to hit 50 million

y Gillian Shaw, Vancouver SunMay 2, 2009

1. EEEPC 1000HE, ASUS, $459

Enjoy all-day computing with the 1000HE that runs for more than nine hours on a charge, with its six-cell lithium-ion battery. At 1.45 kg, a 10-inch LED backlight WSVGA screen, with a $459 price tag, it fits right in the sweet spot of mini computers known as netbooks. Apple is still speaking somewhat derisively about them -- asked about them in its latest financial analysts' call, the company dismissed netbooks as "junky." Apparently, consumers don't agree, and they are turning these little gadgets into one of the faster-selling items on tech shelves -- an estimated 50 million to be sold this year. ASUS is a netbook pioneer, and the 1000HE comes with 160 GB storage, one-gig memory, camera, 802.11 high-speed wireless and Bluetooth built in. Check it out at www.asus.com.

2. MSI WIND TOP AE 1900, MSI COMPUTER, $529 US

An all-in-one computer, the AE 1900 has an 18.9-inch touch screen and SRS premium sound. With an Intel Atom 230 processor, it runs Windows XP home and has built-in webcam and microphone for audio and video recording. MSI is on the green bandwagon, with the AE1900 that uses 80 per cent less energy than traditional desktop PCs and it consumes no more than 50 watts of power. A 160-gig hard drive, a four-in-one card reader and four USB ports, along with a mouse and keyboard complete the package. www.msicomputer.com/msiaio
